In class, we learned an interesting new tool called Fakebook. It is an educational tool intended to have students create profiles of interesting literary or historical features with social media. I created the profile of Christopher Columbus, and I thought it was a fun way to research a historical figure. It also can stir creativity by posting humorous posts by family, friends, or acquaintances of the character.
The beneficial aspect is that students are researching the birthplace, important dates, and contributions of the figure. Fakebook is designed in a time line format, so my 5th grade students would need to learn how to lay out their page in chronological order. I'm not sure if 5th grade parents would appreciate this tool, but I do think my students would be engaged.
Wikipedia is becoming more acceptable to use in the classroom. More educators are using this tool because it is heavily monitored and checked for credibility. I still think I prefer primary sources, but I do see it as a good tool for gaining background information.
