Oh my, I love Dropbox! I've heard about this program, but honestly didn't see the value in it besides saving space on my laptop. However, this tool has been so beneficial for me in the past week. Storytime:
Last Thursday night, my hard drive on my MacBook Pro decided to "explode" on me. The following day, I had our school tech look at it, and she immediately assessed that it would need to be sent in to be repaired and have my data transfered to a new laptop. I received an email that day explaining that my hard drive files were recovered, but I was without a laptop for a time being.
Here is where Dropbox comes in. In last class Tuesday, I spent a bit of time uploading all my favorite PDF files of digital workbooks I have purchased over the past year. I was doing this to save space on my laptop and also show other teachers what files I have available if they wanted to browse my purchases and buy it themselves. The past few days, I have been incredibly grateful to have a backup of these PDFs. Than you Dropbox!
I have been a long time user of Google docs for collaborative projects. I'm currently using it right now to plan a trip to Europe. I will be honest in saying, I don't see the value in it for teaching. I like to collaborate face to face with other teachers, and this is my preferred form of communication. I have only one other team member interested in collaborating period, and we tend to talk in person rather than online. I'm sure that may change if I gain more friendships with 5th grade teachers across the district. We shall see.
