Today's class was interesting. We mostly talked about the pros and cons of using social media in education. I do believe that social media has a place in education, but I'm still unsure how to implement it in my 5th grade classroom.
I'm not sure if Facebook or Twitter is something I'd want to tackle with such a young group of children. The one intriguing avenue of social media is student blogs and student websites. These are appealing to me because I think it'd be great to have a monitored forum for students to share ideas, publish work, and give feedback to each other. There is one website I saw in which students post responses to news articles (with a teacher monitoring comments). This is done as homework. I imagine that it would be validating for a student to have others reading his/her work.
These two social media ideas are exciting. Twitter and Facebook? Not yet.
