Today, we discussed the importance of formative and summative evaluations. I use formative assessments every time I ask thumbs up/down questions, smileys, number checks, and ticket exits. I do perform summative evaluations occasionally, but I've found more value in using formative evaluations frequently to check for understanding.
Rubrics allow students to meet expectations. I like to show students my rubrics so they know where points are coming from. They typically always rise up to meet the challenge. Some items to include in rubrics:
-Objectives are clear
-Sufficiently detailed
-Should fit on one paper -- don't include too many items
I really enjoyed using the Rubistar website to create rubrics. I think I'll visit this site quite often!
This week I will be working on my evaluation of my unit. There were many positives and also several weaknesses that I did not foresee. I think keeping records of my data will help me fine tune this unit for the future.
