Today in class, we learned about the 6 elements and 7 steps of digital storytelling. I thought it was really interesting how Kelly related storytelling to a stage production, where the author is the performer and the audience is the active listener. I've been around people who are excellent storytellers, and this principle is true: they are excellent at painting an image in your head. Music and visuals are helpful to have the audience see the same picture.
Story boards were emphasized heavily in class. This is the process of creating a visual map for the concept of your story. Doing this will allow both teachers and students to have direction and a more professional product. Animators in Disney have used story boards for years. We have a lot to learn from them!
I was most interested in learning about stop motion animation. I understood the concept behind it, but it was really exciting to make a short video and have it look somewhat professional! After adding music, I was excited to see my creation.
Our short stop motion video has a fun concept, but we have run into a few issues: First of all, we need more frames -- like 300. Right now, our video is only 2 frames per second, but it would be ideal if we had it as 4 or 5 frames per second. Second, in order to increase these frames, we would need to create an identical set. I'm not sure if that's possible, but I think that's what we will do. Overall, the concept is fun and I really enjoy working with my group. I'm excited to see the finished product.
