There are nine themes of digital citizenship. Teachers should be aware of how these themes influence their teaching in the classroom. The following are several themes that relate to teachers and their students.
Digital Access explains that all teachers must have awareness when it comes to internet-centered projects for students. It says that not every user has the same access to technology. This means that it can't be expected that all students have access to the internet at home for various projects and assignments. This theme also explains that no user should be denied access to the internet because internet usage is critical in order to become a productive citizen.
As a teacher, I believe it's important for students to understand and be familiar with Digital Communication, Digital Literacy, and Digital Etiquette. Digital Communication is defined as the electronic exchange of information. Students live in a world where communication is constant, and they must know how to use and collaborate with other users around the world. This communication is critical for students because it illustrates the importance of writing clearly and intentionally to get across a message. Digital Literacy is the process of teaching and learning about the use of technology in schools. It is the infusion of technology that can be seen in the workplace. Digital literacy is something I'm striving to implement in my lesson plans. Through the use of iPads and different apps, my students will hopefully see how technology and education go hand in hand. Digital Etiquette is the standards of conduct used on the internet. This etiquette is a major topic of discussion because many students do not understand how to be responsible and follow the rules and regulations online. Last year, my students needed instruction on how to contribute meaningful conversation to blogs. This was something I had not anticipated. We had to have several lessons on how to keep messages on topic and stop spamming!
Digital Law is showing responsibility for actions taken online. In my classroom, we have discussed the issue of plagiarizing or stealing other people's work without citing properly. The internet can be a home to many illegal activities, so it's important to have a discussion with students about what activities are legal and ethical to do online at school and at home.
